What to Expect

Upon arriving at the UF Small Animal Hospital, you and your pet will be placed in an exam room by one of our client liaisons.  A third- or fourth-year veterinary student will come in and introduce themselves and take a history, as well as perform a physical examination on your pet.  After this information is gathered, the students are instructed to bring your pet to the Neurology treatment room, where your pet will be examined by a member of the Neurology staff consisting of residents and neurology specialists, assisted by a specialized neurology technician; the case will be discussed between the student and doctor.  Once the neurologic exam and initial assessment is complete, your team will return to the exam room.  At this time, the doctor and the student will go over their findings  with you, along with any additional diagnostic recommendations and a proposed treatment plan.

Neurology evaluations often include running certain tests which can be time-consuming, so please prepare for a longer visit which, depending on what is recommended, is typically 2-6 hours.  We may ask that you leave your pet with us during this time so that we may complete our evaluation and provide you with a detailed plan.  We realize that your time is valuable and will do everything possible to address your situation in a timely fashion.  At the same time, we also appreciate your understanding that it is also important that we take the time necessary to provide the absolute best care possible for your pet.

Unless otherwise directed, please do not feed your pet (food) after midnight on the night before his/her appointment (unless your pet is diabetic); Water is allowed (as much as desired).  Unless otherwise directed, medications can be given to your pet as prescribed.
